Radial Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave Therapy is the perfect treatment method for all chronic and complex musculoskeletal conditions. Shockwaves are characterised by a jump in pressure, and via the applicator, this pressure is transmitted into the tissues.
The shockwave travels into and through the tissue, enabling treatment of both diseases on the surface and pathological processes located in deeper tissues.
Benefits of Shockwave Therapy include:(1)
- Pain reduction
- Regeneration of the affected tissue
- Reversal of chronic inflammation
- Stimulates collagen production
- Dissolution of calcification
- Release of trigger points
- Antibacterial effect(2)
Clinical studies with Shockwave Therapy indicates an 80% success rate with 6-8 treatment sessions needed on average. (3)

FAQs:
1. Does treatment hurt?
Some people experience slight discomfort; however, the treatment is quite short in duration, and therefore most patients can tolerate the discomfort. Intensity can be adjusted throughout treatment to ensure there is minimal discomfort. Most patients will experience immediate pain relief following the session, however soreness in the treated area is normal within 2-4 hours of the treatment, with most patients reporting the soreness as tolerable and not limiting.
2. What are some contraindications to this treatment?
- Pregnancy
- Bleeding blood coagulation disorders and associated medicinal consumption
- Skin wound or acute inflammation
- Tumour in treatment area
3. How does Shockwave Therapy work within the tissue?
The shockwaves delivered cause microscopic injuries and acute controlled trauma within the tissue. These microscopic inflictions are so tiny, they do not cause any macroscopic trauma or injuries! These microscopic changes will stimulate and activate the production of new blood vessels, and promote the body’s own natural healing process.
4. Is Shockwave Therapy safe?
Shockwave Therapy is a safe and non-invasive treatment. There are no reports of long-term effects or damage.
5. What happens during the session?
During Shockwave treatment, firstly the physiotherapist will find the area of pain by searching for the painful/’trigger’ points. Gel is applied to the skin which allows the shockwaves to the penetrate the tissue properly. The treatment itself is fast, however sessions also involve thorough assessment, and education into post treatment plans.
6. How can Shockwave Therapy help with Women’s Health and Men’s Health?
People who suffer from pelvic floor pain can be treated with shockwave therapy. Women who suffered from sexual pain found that their pain had minimised or was completely gone, they had improved sexual function and higher pain thresholds.(4)
