FAQs:
1. Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist? No, you do not need a referral to see our physiotherapists. A referral is only required under the following circumstances:
- Work Cover
- TAC (Transport Accident Commission)/Motor Vehicle Accidents
- DVA (Department of Veterans' Affairs)
- Care Plan Program (CDM)/Enhanced Primary Care Program (EPC)
2. What can I expect in my first appointment of physiotherapy?
Our physiotherapists begin by trying to understand the problem, and more specifically the cause of the problem by asking a series of questions. Try to remember as much detail about when, how and what caused the symptoms to start. Our physiotherapists are trained to ask the right questions and collect all of the required information! A physical assessment is done to confirm and diagnose your problem.
Your physiotherapist may move you through a variety of movements to determine your strength and flexibility in certain muscles, ligaments and tendons. Your physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan that will include education about your problem to help you manage it! Your treatment plan can incorporate a number of different services (that were mentioned above) that is best suited for you.
3. Is physiotherapy covered by Medicare?
If your GP has assessed you and you are suitable for CDM/EPC, you may be given a referral for up to 5 Physiotherapy sessions per calendar year. This means Medicare will cover part of your treatment, however there will be a gap fee.IF you do not have an EPC referral from your GP, or other services that cover sessions i.e. Workcover, you may use your private health care. The level of coverage is dependent on the plan you have with your private health care provider.
4. What should I bring?
We recommend bringing any scans, X-rays, reports, or referral letters (from other healthcare professionals) that are related to the problem area. We strongly encourage you to arrive 10 minutes early for your first appointment to fill out any paperwork and provide us with any documents.
5. How many sessions will I need?
Our ultimate aim is to place you in a position where the problem is reduced or minimised, and there is no longer a need for physiotherapy. So, if you find that you are experiencing no improvement, please discuss this with your physiotherapist to determine if extra or further support is required, or perhaps a referral for a different specialist. Ultimately, every treatment plan is different and personalised, therefore it is best to make an appointment with your health professional/physiotherapist to create the best treatment plan for you!
6. What should I wear to my physio appointment?
It is important that the physiotherapist can have a good view of the affected body part. Shorts and t-shirts are ideal as many problem areas can be accessed easily; however, we understand that this option is not for everyone, so first and foremost, it is most important that you are comfortable. You can bring a change of clothes in your bag if that suits you too! Please keep in mind, some cases you may be asked to undress to underwear depending on the circumstance of the injury.
7. Does physiotherapy actually work?
Physiotherapy is committed to following an Evidence Based Approach. This means that there is continuously ongoing research that is testing common techniques against placebo, or other techniques. If a technique is not producing effects better than the placebo, or other techniques, then we stop using it. This ensures we are using the most effective and modern approach to your treatment!
