GAIT Scan

At Modern Physiotherapy Clinic, Gait analysis utilises the MobileMat® from Teksan Inc. The MobileMat® is a pressure sensing floor mat designed to:
  • Identify areas of high plantar (sole) pressure
  • Give Insights into biomechanics and foot function
The MobileMat® is used in conjunction with SAM™ (Sway Analysis Module), allowing for:
  • Analysis of sway (sway being the oscillating movement of the body)
  • Assessment of postural stability by detecting key stability parameters that would be unseen by the naked eye
The Gait Scan results can highlight abnormal foot functioning which can contribute to pain. The objective information received from a Gait Scan is:
  • Walking pattern (gait)
  • How your feet make contact with the ground
  • What area of the foot is taking majority of the force and pressure
  • Timing of the force under the foot
The way you walk can be affected by only a small injury resulting in mild pain, stiffness or weakness. However, a poor subsequent walking pattern can then cause compensatory injuries such as foot, hip or back pain. Furthermore, without intervention, this inefficient walking pattern can increase your susceptibility to other chronic injuries.
Benefits of a Gait Scan
Analysis of your gait can identify many different conditions, and if recognised early, intervention is very effective. The Gait Scan allows for:
  • The ability to determine pre-existing genetic factors that could potentially lead to a greater problem i.e., leg length differences, neurological problems
  • Determining the need for specific exercise programs or other medical professional engagement
  • Determining the risk of pressure sores and ulcerations, especially in diabetic patients
  • Risk assessment for falls and/or injuries
  • Pre and post pregnancy evaluation
FAQs:
1. What conditions is a Gait Scan suitable for?
If you are experiencing any pain or condition involving the foot, ankle, knee, hip or lower back, a Gait Scan is suitable for you. Specific conditions that require a Gait Scan are:
  • Achilles pain
  • Heel pain
  • Arch pain
  • Osteoarthritis of the foot, knee or hip
  • Pelvic pain
  • Bunions
2. What are Gait problems and how are they caused?
Gait inefficiency can be caused by injury or illness, such as:
  • Backward leaning during walking can indicate weak hip muscles
  • Forward bending during walking can indicate weak thigh muscles
  • Foot slapping while walking can indicate weakness in the ankle joint muscles
  • Inability to balance and semicircle movement of the hips whilst walking can indicate hip muscle weakness
3. What types of conditions can cause Gait disorders?
  • Neurologic
  • Orthopaedic
  • Medical
  • Psychiatric
