Sports Physiotherapy
Athletes typically place a greater demand upon their body which stresses the muscles, joints and bones. Sports physiotherapy helps athletes recover, and also provides support and education to prevent reoccurrence or further problems. Many sport injuries are caused by a specific traumatic event such as tearing ligaments, muscles or tissues from landing wrong, etc. They may also be caused by simply overworking the body and placing inappropriate physical demands upon yourself, such as constantly lifting heavy weights.
Although sports injuries may require surgery to fix the problem, physiotherapy is often a large requirement for treatment to further alleviate symptoms and re-strengthen the tissues that have been affected. For example, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries require surgery, however physiotherapy appointed exercises such as heel slides, quad sets or straight leg raises are required to regain the strength and function that was lost.
At Modern Physiotherapy Clinic, we specialise in treating a wide range of sports injuries and have worked with top-ranked professional athletes from a variety of sports. We use the latest technology to treat sports injuries, including TECAR therapy, Shockwave therapy, and more. These treatments can speed up the recovery process and reduce pain and inflammation.

2. What is Dynamometer and how it can help your physiotherapist to track and treat the sports injuries?
The Dynamometer is simply a test to determine your muscle strength, measure the strength objectively, and evaluate right/ left symmetry. It allows our physiotherapists to perform muscle assessments that identify potential strength deficiencies that could lead to injury. The system allows them to perform baseline evaluations and track progress throughout the treatment to develop the most effective strengthening programs.
It can accurately measure:
- Peak force
- Average force
- Force over time
- Force/weight ratio
- Muscle symmetry Neuromuscular deficits
This service is best used over many sessions to track the changes over time and apply the suitable treatment. It can provide:
- Results in real time
- Strength progress
- Data from test session reports delivered and saved for future reference
- Neuromuscular control with bio-feedback
3. What is Inclinometer ?
The Inclinometer is a tool used to assess your active and passive range of motion (AROM & PROM). A full range of motion means you are functioning as normal, and you can return to your life of work, recreation and daily activities. Range of motion is the ability of a joint to go through its complete spectrum of movement.
4. What triggers the limited range of motion and how our physiotherapists can help?
Limited range of motion is caused by:
- Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Cerebral Palsy
- Legg-Calve-Perthes disease.
- Sepsis of the hip and other joints
- Congenital Torticollis
- Inflammation of soft tissues surrounding joints
- Muscle stiffness
- Pain
- Joint dislocation
- Fractures
Our physiotherapists are constantly monitoring the progress in range of motion via Inclinometer. They can help improve your range of motion by:
- Stimulating healing and recovery of soft tissue and joint lesion injuries/pain
- Maintaining the existing joint and soft tissue function
- Enhancing joint movement
- Assisting with neuromuscular problems
We improve range of motion by targeting:
- Movement at the joint
- Function of the joint
- Movement efficiency
- Pain relief
- Joint integrity
5. How do you treat excessive vs limited Range of Motion?
Excessive range of motion occurs when joint structures are hyper-mobile – a naturally genetic condition. This is more common in women than men. Typically, this is seen in fingers, elbows, shoulders, lumbar spine and knees. If you repetitively use joints in an increased range of motion, this can cause detrimental effects, for example, ballet dancers commonly suffer from bunions due to the excessive use of the feet.(8)
Limited range of motion is a reduction in the ability of the joint to move normally. This can be caused by injury, medical conditions, or stress, and is often associated with pain, swelling and stiffness.
Despite a limited range of motion usually being conceived as worse than an excessive range of motion, it is important that everyone maintains a normal range of motion. A normal range of motion helps with:
- Maintaining stability
- Correct mechanical function of joints
- Preventing soft tissue injuries
- Minimizing impact of arthritis
- Reducing the incidence of pain
- Decreasing pressure on joints
People with excessive range of motions should focus on strengthening the muscles to stabilize the joints, and maintain bone density in the long term.(9)
Exercises include:
- Clinical pilates
- The use of resistance bands, dumbbells and body weight in every day movements, i.e., sitting and standing from a chair can be more beneficial if you include a resistance band to create extra tension
- Standing balance exercises, whether it be single-legged, or on a wobble board. You can increase the difficulty by adding in squats on a wobble board, or incorporating a ball to throw and catch while balancing
People with limited range of motions should focus on stretching the muscles, and relieving the pain and inflammation surrounding joints. Our physiotherapists can offer:
Our physiotherapist will provide you with an exercise program that will revolve around stretching the muscles and joints.
